چکیده

Many ethnomathematical studies examine the existence of mathematics concepts in Indonesian cultural products where batik is one them. However, there a lacunae from previous that mathematical Batik Sidoluhur. Therefore, current study aims to explore Sidoluhur, such as geometry, algebra, arithmetic, and statistics. The used ethnography an approach by answering four principal questions, namely "where do I start looking?", "how find it?", recognize it has found something significant?" understand what is?". By researchers managed concept contained From explored, statistics, only geometry Sidoluhur been confirmed expert. Sub-concepts are (1) sub-concepts transformations translation reflection, (2) plane rhombuses, rectangles, triangles, circles, (3) congruence. It hoped results this can be materials promote younger generation through contextual meaningful learning. In article also explained how use context

Mathematical Concepts and Definitions

I Definition and Mathematical Practice The basic observation structuring this survey is that mathematicians often set finding the “right” / “proper” / “correct” / “natural” definition as a research objective, and success finding “the proper” definition can be counted as a significant advance in knowledge. Remarks like these from a retrospective on twentieth century algebraic geometry are common:

The computational generative patterns in Indonesian batik

The paper discusses the terminology behind batik crafting and showed the aspects of self-similarity in its ornaments. Even though a product of batik cannot be reduced merely into its decorative properties, it is shown that computation can capture some interesting aspects in the batik-making ornamentation. There are three methods that can be exploited to the generative batik, i.e.: using fractal...

Mathematical Concepts and Physical Objects

Introduction (with F. Bailly) With this text, we will first of all discuss a distinction, internal to mathematics, between "construction principles" and "proof principles" (see [Longo, 1999], [Longo, 2002]). In short, it will be a question of grasping the difference between the construction of mathematical concepts and structures and the role of proof, more or less formalised. The objective is ...

Mathematical Variables as Indigenous Concepts

This paper explores the semiotic status of algebraic variables. To do that we build on a structuralist and post-structuralist train of thought going from Mauss and Lévi-Strauss to Baudrillard and Derrida. We import these authors’ semiotic thinking from the register of indigenous concepts (such as mana), and apply it to the register of algebra via a concrete case study of generating functions. T...

Mathematical concepts and investigative practice

In this paper I investigate two notions of concepts that have played a dominant role in 20th century philosophy of mathematics. According to the first, concepts are definite and fixed; in contrast, according to the second notion concepts are open and subject to modifications. The motivations behind these two incompatible notions and how they can be used to account for conceptual change are pres...
